I got a card grant. How do I use it?

How to activate and spend a card grant, the limits to know, the do's and don'ts, and who to contact for help.

💡 A card grant is a virtual card a program gives you to spend on a specific purpose. Activate it from the email you received, then spend it online at the merchants the program allows.

What is a card grant?

A card grant is a virtual card preloaded with a set amount for a specific purpose, like funding your project or a prize, issued to you by a Hack Club program. It works like a normal debit card, within the limits set by the program.

How do I activate it?

  1. Open the email you got about your grant and click the link.

  2. Sign in, then review and accept the terms.

  3. Click Start spending to activate the card.

How do I spend it?

Your grant is a virtual card. On the card grant page you'll find the card number, the expiration month and year, the CVV (the 3-digit security code), and the billing address. Enter those at checkout like any online card.

Limitations

  • A spending cap. A grant only ever holds the amount it was given. A purchase larger than the remaining balance is declined.

  • Locked merchants. Programs usually limit a grant to specific merchants (an "allowlist"). If you try to pay somewhere that isn't allowed, the transaction declines. Some grants are also one-time use, so the card stops working after a single purchase.

  • Who to contact. The program that issued your grant controls your amount, spend-by date, and allowed merchants, so reach out to them for anything about those. For a technical bug with HCB itself, email [email protected] with a description and screenshots.

Do's

  • Upload a receipt right after each purchase. A valid, itemized receipt is required for every transaction. Snapping a photo on the spot keeps you from losing it.

  • Keep your card details private. Treat the number, CVV, and billing address like any card. Don't share them or post them anywhere.

Don'ts

  • Don't use it for free trials or subscriptions. These often place a hold or auto-renew, which can cause declines or charges you didn't plan for.

  • Don't spend it off-purpose. Use your grant only for what the program gave it to you for, not for anything else.
