Can I get nonprofit discounts?

How to pursue nonprofit discounts as a fiscally sponsored project, and what to share with companies.

šŸ’” Yes, it's worth pursuing. As a project of The Hack Foundation, a registered 501(c)(3), you have the tax-exempt status many companies look for when they offer nonprofit discounts.

How to get a nonprofit discount

  1. Find the company's nonprofit or "for nonprofits" pricing page and follow how they ask you to apply.

  2. When they ask for your organization name, enter your own name with the sponsorship noted, like Your Org Name (fiscally sponsored by The Hack Foundation), rather than just "The Hack Foundation."

  3. Share that you're a fiscally sponsored project of The Hack Foundation, a registered 501(c)(3), and give your tax ID (EIN) 81-2908499.

āš ļø Verification services like TechSoup and Goodstack don't work for fiscally sponsored organizations. If a company uses one of those, don't go through the service. Contact the company directly instead and explain that you're fiscally sponsored by The Hack Foundation, a 501(c)(3).

If a company asks about fiscal sponsorship

Some companies are most familiar with organizations that have their own 501(c)(3). If they have questions, explain that your project operates under The Hack Foundation's tax-exempt status, and share its EIN and paperwork (you'll find the documents in your organization's Documents). That's often all they need to move forward.

Good to know

Each company decides its own nonprofit pricing, so availability varies from one product to the next. When in doubt, it's worth asking, plenty of organizations on HCB have gotten nonprofit pricing this way.
